Indianapolis, IN The AWA World Heavyweight Title changed hands in a monumental meeting between two-time champion Omori and challenger and current AWA Mid Atlantic Heavyweight Champion "Slick Diddy" Ric Converse. The Mid Atlantic star raised his game and defeated the champion to win the AWA World Heavyweight Title at the AWA MegaEvent, outdoors under the stars. Following Converse's victory over Omori, Steve Corino & Ricky Landel rushed the ring after the referee's nose was broken in an apparent attempt to screw him out of the title. Omori actually grabbed the official's shirt and pulled him into the corner with him as Converse was rushing in with a wicked forearm shot to the face. "Krazy K" Kirby Mack & T.J. Mack hit the ring to back up the new World Champion, evening up the odds. (06.15.06)

The 1st vs. Omori For AWA World Title!
"The 1st" Ric Converse had been on the hunt for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship, nearly capturing the title in October against then champion, Steve Corino. Converse had a rematch for the belt in January, however as luck would have it, Corino was defeated for the title in Japan by Shinjiro Otani, just one week prior to the scheduled title rematch.
Converse went on to defeat Corino in January, however it was Converse's AWA Mid-Atlantic Hwt. Title that was on the line that night. With the victory over the former World Champion, Converse solidified his number one contender slot in the AWA World Rankings. As negotiations were taking place to secure Converse's title bout agaist Otani, a new champion would be crowned as Takao Omori scored a historic win at the Yasukuni Shrine in Toyko over Otani to become a 2-time AWA World Hwt. Champion.
Omori has stated that he intends to break the AWA Japanese record held by Jumbo Tsuruta with 16 title defenses. So far the champion has turned back the challenges of Tom Howard and Tatsutoshi Goto. Omori will be flying into the United States to defend the AWA World Hwt. Title against all North American challengers in June.
AWA Mid-Atlantic Commissioner Willam L. Cross was happy to announce today that AWA President Dale Gagne has awarded Ric Converse his title shot on Wednesday, June 14, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Cross commented, "Ric has waited a long time for this chance and I was very pleased to inform him of this rare opportunity. We had hoped to have Converse challenge Omori here in the Mid-Atlantic, but there was no way Ric was going to turn down a World Title Match. He's had his shot at the World Title taken away several times due to just plain bad timing so Ric was prepared to wrestle Omori anywhere if offered the chance."
